Just been playing around with Photoshop for the past hour on how the brand new graphic concept 'ASHWORTH' would look like for a cover.

This time I want to keep things real simple even the design of the title and the book cover!

I decided to take advice from a rising star graphic novelist Jason Brubaker (creator of his very successful reMIND series) regarding comic fonts.

Clearly to keep your graphic novel original you can start by customising the lettering to your dialogue. I used a font generator site that Jason suggest called 'YourFonts.com' to crate my own custom made letters. For $9.95 it's well worth the investment since you can imprint a signature style to your own using your own hand-writing! What you see on the drawing is completely my own handwriting created through that website.

Thanks Jason for the awesome initiative, I told you already, from time and time again, that you can learn so much from the guy.

Anyways time to move on to more concept pictures of 'ASHWORTH'. Details about the story are strictly kept under wraps for the moment. I'm going to let my holiday trip to Canada and the United States help inspire me more on developing the story, characters and ending that I very much needed after all these years working on the web-comic project.

Be right back with more 'ASHWORTH - Tales of the Cursed Wombat'.

Don't leave us hanging there for too long, ok? :giggle: I'll be looking forward to the updates about this!

I like Ashworth's new look. Is just a portion there, but I like. I always found him pretty intimidating-looking but looks cool. Excellent!
Simplicity sometimes is more attractive. But to be blunt, I never expected to you want to try that, lol. You always liked to draw everything very detailed as possible.
Is a new good road.
Did you noticed that is the 3rd time that you change the series by complete in 4 years? XD

Cheers dude! I've got much less of a burden as compared to GRAND HUNTER series because the story is much less complicated than ever before - well plot wise... XD I got something that I can finally follow rather than being wrapped up by the obscurity of many different possibilities for the story to take direction. ^^

Exactly. :D It saves me future hassle of dealing with copyright of other people's fonts. I hope to create another set of fonts in future but for now I'll be using this style of font as the official dialogue to the graphic novel. :)

He looks so serious :wow: Is he going to be how he was in Grand Hunter - wild and carefree - or something else entirely? The expression on his face makes it appear he's about to embark on a very important mission.

Aw shucks, I wish you could tell us what the story's about :O Well, I hope you find lots of inspiration and ideas for Ashworth on your trip! As a person who aspires to become a well-known author, you're going to need it; so best of luck to you!

Entirely different this time - he's more focused on his mission but at the same time he feels burdened by something that follows him around everywhere. You will soon find out what that is in then next drawing. ;)

Thanks for the encouragement too! ^_~

Yeah, simple is good. That's a lesson I really need to take to heart too. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with this!

My handwriting is a crazy quasi-cursive mess-- t, f,and 6 all look the same. I think I'll just stick with something readable... isn't what the words are saying more important than what they look like?

In future Evan if you ever plan to do your own original comic series I highly recommend you check out some of Brubaker's blogs on how to go about in creating a graphic novel. You can start by checking out this popular article he did about why NOT to use COMIC SANS for fonts... [link]

I'm in the middle of finishing off a drawing of Ashworth, portrait style.

Your t, f,and 6 look the same?? XD Well I guess if you do it in print form it won't matter. ;)

Regarding your statement about the importance of words having meaning over the presentation - whilst true, it is also a good idea to get people reading the book in the first place (and to keep them reading on till the end of the book) and that's where presentation comes into play. From what I gathered people who want to look for something special they sometimes judge a graphic novel by it's cover (even in the minute detail of the fonts used in the book). :D

But then again that's just my opinion after learning what I've gathered from Jason's blogs and his referrals to other sites that back up his study and thesis. *thumbs up*

Yeah, you're right... I'm just a bit of a stick in the mud when it comes to lettering. I've never liked it much. I always go with the easiest option... that's why I almost never sound effects. And I know it's totally lame-- I'll try poking around Blambot for something a little better, I'm still reluctant to actually fork over cash just for my just-for-fun comics. Hundreds of hours of work and my social life yes, but not ten bucks. I'm weird like that.

It will definitely awesome to go for that 3 course meal! I love food and cooking and I can't wait to check it out! I'll see what happens when I come to San Francisco on the 28th & 29th!

Be sure to note me your cell phone number Nara-chan! I'll be using a SIM card from the States so I don't have my number yet. :D We'll do what we can to catch up! ;)

Btw did you happen to see Aaron Weber hanging around at the Starbucks with the crew? XD I'm going to head over to SEGA and give him something by mail. I'd love to catch up with him for a meal but I doubt it since he's very busy. XD

Minimalistic does seem to be the Theme here. All in all, sometimes it's better, unless you're the kind of person who's really gung-ho about making things as awesome as possible.
Still, I think it's really good.

Also, is this the new look for Grand Hunter or is it a prequel altogether? Personally, I think the Title looks and sounds really good.
Hope that your trip overseas grants you all the Inspiration you seek!!

Hope those comments above will answer some of your questions Banter. ^_~

It's a complete revamp with the re-use of characters I've designed in the past. They will play a uniquely different role in this brand new story that is 'ASHWORTH'. ^_^

This trip of mine will definitely inspire me, though I want to have a whole heap of fun at the same time and not focus too much on worrying about what to put into the graphic novel. XD
