Those Who Lead The Valley by ElsonWong Those Who Lead The Valley by ElsonWong
:star: Those Who Lead The Valley :star:

The Okoblaya, a small and scattered group of anthros who were separated by a dramatic civil war, are the only remaining hope of possibly binding the two great nations together (Wolf and Bear nations) and bring peace once more to 'The Valley'.

The Okoblaya, which means 'peacefully' in Lakota, is lead by an elder named Tunkasila - he is wise and an experienced shaman who have lived long enough to witness war and peace for two generations in 'The Valley' - the size and growth of his curved horns is proof of his ageing wisdom.

Among him are three of his disciples who are believed to hold something special, a key if you will, that will achieve this peace in 'The Valley' that Tunkasila has foreseen in his dreams.

The first two are Mato and Caksi - both strong and charismatic emps (aka men). Mato (from Bear Nation) and Caksi (from Wolf nation) come from a high end family with a military background - their parents and family were either violently killed or brutally punished for opposing the nation's order to fight against the opposing nation after the infamous sabotaged peace treaty event that took place four seasons ago. The two, even though they don't fully trust each other, believe that with the help of Tunkasila, their combined forces, and a solid plan they can reclaim trust and achieve the peace they've longed for for both nations.

The third disciple is Ruby, Ruby 'Locke' Steadfast, who has mysterious healing powers and is the final key to the puzzle. Despite her role being unclear to the Okoblaya, only Tunkasila truly knows what is expected of her and how she will achieve in solving the crisis between the two nations. Because of this the Okoblaya, as well as the two disciples are not fully confident the about shaman's plans that seemed disclosed to the group.

Nevertheless what you see here is a painted picture of the three disciples and their teacher who will help guide them to completing the mission. And this mission, that was originally planned in the beginning (i.e. before the sabotage), once achieved will bring two nations together and restore their trust and friendship for generatons to come. It is foreseen by Tunkasila that if the peace is not attained quickly - chaos and disorder will follow for 'The Valley' and every anthro who live amongst it will die and perish forever.

Ruby is actually shedding some tears if you look closely. She is upset by all the hate, the fighting and bloodshed that devastation the two nations. I added in the element of rain to emphasis that emotion which also adds a nice touch of atmosphere into the drawing.

The location of where this is drawn is at the peak a gorge that is overlooking 'The Valley' and 'Melissa River' (just a reminder: The name came from the early settlers of 'The Valley' where the river was dedicated to the first lady who devised a unity between the two nations at the heart of the river - where water can be shared by all creatures equally).

Also, I just want to quickly thank everyone who have been giving me a lot of encouragement and positive feedback on the character redesigns and brand new concept that the ASHWORTH series is heading for. More concept art to come in the future! *thumbs up*

While I'm not very pleased with Fei's new design, I can't see how Ruby could look any better! I confess she before looked too much a blue thing fanchar. I mean, there wasn't any way to tell otherwise, no matter what.
But hey, this is a nice turn, congrats!

I think you have a more natural thing to draw female characters hum.....
Ah, it's natural! I prefer to draw males :P

Excellent - looks like Ruby's new looks is getting the thumbs up from a lot of people. ^_^

I would suggest adding red colored feathers down her torso, because from here it looks as if only her head is colored red, while rest of her is white.
It gives kind of a... I dunno, bland feeling.

This just keeps me more interested the new story your approaching to your characters.

As far as from I read here and looking at Ruby, it looks like she's quite a someone who doesn't appreciate fighting and especially bloodshed, which is something I didn't see in the Fortune Hunter story. Although I wonder how will she cope with it when she partners with Ashworth.

This is unrelated, but somehow when I listen to the song:
Altaria - Unchain the Rain

I see the music fitting well in the pic, especially in part of the lyrics where it gives me much more emotional effect. When I listen to it and looking at the pic together:

"Drown your sorrow to my endless sea,
together weŽll unchain the rain,
escape the light into my sanctuary,
there in my arms youŽll be free."

Not sure if the band's music is to your liking, but I felt it was good for me to express on what I have experienced.

This is really lovely ! I love all the dark colors you used to make it somber and the inclusion of subtle rain, but at the same time there's light shining the way in the distance. Just gives you goosebumps. xD I don't know much about your characters before their redisgns but they do look like they're evolving very gracefully ! Love Ruby's new emphasis toward cardinals (very cute birds but like blue jays, I wouldn't get on their bad side xD ). To give her more variety of emotion, I'd probably emphasize her cheek feathers more with a jagged, feathery line running down along the side of her beak. You can do a lot with cheeks and cheek bones in terms of facial expression, especially with cartoon characters, so I see lots of variety and fun in her drawn future. :D

Dunno if you mind critique, but her left hand looks a little off. Even though her hand is facing toward the viewer, I'd probably place a little bit more of the palm toward the bottom of the fingers and then connect to the arm from there. Others have wondered about her arms having feathers, and it does look like she's wearing sleeves due to her smooth arms, so I would say maybe add more tufts around the elbow and shoulder in future drawings but it seems like you already commented about that. xD Hehe. I love all the details you put into the elder. He is just a fantastic character, and I do like sheepy ram creatures. x}

It's feedback like this that makes it all worthwhile. ;)

Yes! I actually am disappointed about that little bit of detail that I had forgotten to add in - and now I will remember since you guys have mentioned about it - Ruby's arm looks too clean shaven and unnatural.

I didn't add in the small thufts of feather like in it was featured on the original design. [link] So yup that is defintely my fault. :D

As for the left hand - yeah it was easy to draw that but I did what I could and was pretty pleased with the result actually! Thanks for letting me know what you think though - if it could be fixed I guess I'll have to try harder next time! :) Do take notice that I'm going four fingered now for all of the characters in CURSED WOMBAT. ;)

"...But it's still not enough: to live side by side does not mean forgetting we are all Different..."

I'm instantly drawn by Ruby's presence in the center by the bright red in her head.
I really think you did a good job in giving her the outfit she's wearing: makes for a light and easy-to-move in feeling, as well as an appropriate Adventure-Type get-up.

The cloaks' color scheme on Mato and Tunkasila go well with the Gloomy atmosphere; the rain's effect is light, but it heightens the overall mood--very nice!!

The actual state of Conflict looks to be consice, but the underlying causes of the War would need to be explored further...anyway, it's looking good!

Awesome! :D It really sets the emotion you were going for. I can't wait to see more of these guys as well as the story. :)
I can see it's raining and that it's cloudy on the left side of the pic but when you look at Ruby the lighting doesn't seem quite right, maybe it's a bit darker on the left side of the pic a bit more. o3o I'm not a pro at this so I might be over-exaggerating, it just seems a bit brighter to me then it should be (maybe because of Ruby's bright red color. It does pop out to main focus though. :3

Something I would like to share because it's interesting is this tumblr page here: [link] though it mainly focuses on setting in animation works the advices there can be very useful for still drawing or comics too. :) You can also find some interesting concept art from different types of animation too, those are always fun to look at, even more fun if it's of your favorite show/film. ^^
