Title:  Speed-way Jam
Track: Sonic Generations (Speed Highway )
Remixed Original Track: Cash Cash, SEGA/Sonic Team
Date: 07th April 2012
Lyrics Co-Written and Performed by: Elson 'Darkspeeds' Wong & Speedio322
Concept & Additional Voices: Elson 'Darkspeeds' Wong
SFXs: SEGA/Sonic Team

[Announcer] "Hey hey! Ya'll listen up! This is gonna be a dynamic duo! Darkspeeds and Speedio322! Let's go!!"

[Darkspeeds]

Make it fast and do a spin attack, no time to go back!
No time to waste, gotta leave no trace! Don't get in my case!
Blasting off at the speed of sound! Goin' pound for pound!
And there ain't no time to fool around. I'm here to be renown!

[Mr. Bobby B.] "Okay! Calm down! Calm down now! It ain't over yet!"

[Darkspeeds]

Three two one! Running at the speed of sound - makes you wanna go… BOOM!
Here we go! It's way past cool - makes you wanna go... ZOOM!

[Chorus]

(Twenty hundred miles an hour!)
Yo this is how we rock and roll!
(Twenty hundred miles an hour)
Speedin' through, we pay no toll!
(Twenty hundred miles an hour!)
Use your feet or spin like a ball!
(Twenty hundred miles an hour!)
Slow it down, won't reach the goal!

[Darkspeeds] "Yea! That's what I'm talkin' about Speedio! What do you think of that?"

[Speedio] "Alright, Alright, I'll admit that was pretty good. But let me give it a shot right quick... Let's go!"

[Speedio's Rap #1]

As I blast thru, runnin' around, I'm tearin' thru the streets,
And you'll never catch me slowing down, that's nothing like me.
I just, keep it goin'-fly thru the day, I'm never lookin' back
I got things all around tryna take me down, so I gotta pick up the slack.

If ya chase me down (I'll go a little faster)
Don't lose sight (I'll never be found)
If you think (You're the speed master)
I'll show you (The speed of sound)
Don't have time to worry bout' danger, never let it keep me down
I'm the king of fast motion, so I'm never losin' my crown.

(One hundred miles an hour)
Pick it up cuz thats too slow
(Ten hundred miles an hour)
Still not enough gotta feel the flow
(Twenty hundred miles an hour)
That's enough to reach the goal.
But I can go more than that, the gift of speed is inside my soul.

[Speedio] "So-ah Darkspeeds, how was that?"

[Darkspeeds] "Not bad dude! How about this. I rap one piece and you do the other?"

[Speedio] "Alright I'm cool with that!"

[Darkspeeds & Speedio] "Okay! Three... Two... One... Let's go!"

[Darkspeeds Rap #1]

Speeding through at the speed of sound!
Grabbing rings as I go!
And there ain't nothing to stop me by!
Won't lose my flow, gonna keep it cool!

[Speedio's Rap #2]

Racing pass my obstacles
Fly at blinding speed
And I'm takin' out my enemies
That's why I take the lead

[Darkspeeds] "Verse Two from the two of us! This is where things get dangerous!"

[Speedio322] "Oh yeah!"

[Darkspeeds] "Yeah, Dr. Eggman's up to no good."

[Speedio322] "You know we gotta stop him, you know what I mean?"

[Darkspeeds] "Yup! It's up to us to do something about it!"

[Speedio322] "Alright"

[Darkspeeds] "Ya know what I'm thinkin'?"

[Speedio322] "I gotcya!"

[Darkspeeds & Speedio322] "LET'S JUICE!"

[POLICE INTERCEPTION #1]

[Darkspeeds #2]

Cops are chasing me everywhere!
Got no time for these tools!
Better chase up to that Eggman fool!
Gotta do all that I can!

[Speedio322 Rap #3]

I got no time to waste right now
Gotta chopper on my tail
But I have to make it thru right now
I have no room to fail

[POLICE INTERCEPTION #2]

[Helicoptor Cop Pilot] "Station Square PDHQ, we got a speed freak running around the city at 10'o clock! Traffic on the streets is in chaos and we got a lot of windows smashed. Subject is probably armed and dangerous. What are your orders?"

[Superior Officer at HQ] "Capture and subdue the subject immediately! Over!"

[Helicoptor Cop Pilot] "Copy! Over!

This was a delight to create.

The moment I heard this while playing Sonic Generations, I KNEW this had to have lyrics at a fast tempo pace! I absolutely loved Cash Cash's rework of this classic from Sonic Adventure - who could forget Sonic speeding through at the speed of sound in a fully immersed 3D metro city level that is Speed Highway - way back in the days of the Dreamcast?

Awesome times.

But nevertheless I felt that it would be a little empty if I just rapped my way through this track alone. So what did I decide to do? Ask Speedio322 to join me that's what!

I was impressed with Speedio322's lyrical work on Sonic Generations' Rooftop Run (Classic) that I invited him into this project.

I shared with him the concept, threw in my lyrics and got him to fill in the rest of the gaps. It was a really cool experience to do my first proper collab work for a Sonic lyrical recording.

I requested that Speedio322 perform two versions, he delivered and was very pleased with the results. Amen to your awesome skills bro - you rock! *thumbs up*

Nevertheless the extra stuff like the POLICE INTERCEPTIONS were thrown in for good measure - I wanted to add in a little atmosphere and to remind players of the old game level design and the elements that MADE it so special.

Strangely enough I sounded just a little bit like Dr. Eggman on the two-way radio right towards the end! Lol!

Hope you'll enjoy what Speedio322 and I did! This was great fun to do at the end of the day. *thumbs up*

I've got an idea; how about you two do this on the modern version? It fits just as well, and I must admit it's my favorite of the two.

I would really love to critique these little lyrical projects you're doing, even though you haven't opened up that option. I enjoy them so much, but I also think you can do better with each next one. Don't get me wrong, they're coming out amazing, but it's just missing that little touch.

First off, I'd like to say that your lyrics are well thought out, and fit well within the feel of the Sonic universe. Lyrics are your most creative point in these projects, since the instruments and melody are already laid out for you. Starting with templates is a good move, however, since it gives your mind an easy start in writing music. I also enjoy how you've overdubbed the vocal tracks to give one track a fallback. It works well, and catches any melodic mistakes that would otherwise be audible in a single track.

The only thing that bothers me about your vocal track on these songs is that you often fall out of the correct octave. This is a typical mistake vocalists do in order to save themselves from cracking their voice. But when it is done in the wrong progressions of the song, it becomes very noticeable. I would suggest that, if you need to change octaves in the middle of the music, you should try to find a good position to do so. Also, always practice your octaves, because you may one day be able to reach those high/low notes you otherwise couldn't, and it could help in improving your vocals.

The octave change is incredibly evident in the verse of your "Taking Off" lyricalization (I'm aware that's totally not a real word). The Darkspeeds portion changes between two octaves where Speedio322 sticks to one octave.

Overall, these are still very enjoyable and a unique idea to entertain the fans. I will always be listening to your lyrical takes on the Sonic music. They always sound so full of fun and excitement, and apply something new to the vast collection of Sonic music that is available. Thanks for taking the time to put these out there for us.

My goodness! It's comments like these that make this exercise of creating lyrical works more rewarding.

Thank you for the feedback RiotaiPrower! I'll need to educate myself on the fundamentals of sounds and music theory (for instance your mention of octaves/high-low notes)... I'm more of a 'do-it-and-learn' person than a 'learn-it-then-do-it' type. I should go for the latter to fill up on some essential knowledge to better understand your suggestions! :D

Nevertheless thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, I can't guarantee an improvement on my next one but hopefully I can achieve it! ;)

Sorry, I meant "Speed-way Jam" instead of "Taking Off". I just had so many windows open of your tracks at the time haha!
